Feather Cushions

Natural relaxed look

Probably the most traditional of all cushion fillings, feather cushions offer a relaxed sit in feel. They are the most widely used natural filling and are soft plump and supportive.

This is the ideal filling to complement old traditional upholstery methods. Again they need daily plumping to get the very best results. Each feather cushion is made separately for every customer.

We are happy to bring samples to you to choose from in the comfort of your own home.

All about Feathers

Like fibre, feather cushions give a soft and less rigid sit than foam. Feather cushions are perfect for those wanting a sofa to sink into, as opposed to sit on.

What we put in our cushions

Feathers can be used for stuffing cushions for upholstery and are judged on the basis of resilience, swell, feel, density and overall their ability to withstand daily use. Feather cushions can be used for seat, back and scatter cushions.

Our feather cushions are stuffed with a mixture three different types of feather Down Contour and Rachis feathers.

  • Down is a small soft feather found on ducks gees and waterfowl. Contour and feathers are large and fern shaped. They cover the body and the wings and tail. This helps the cushion with its soft inviting nature. And on its own has not got the ability to withstand somebody’s weight. For both seat and back cushions.
  • Contour feather is very flexible because of its strong quill. This gives the cushion its resilience.
  • Rachis feather has a middle shaft with many branches known as barbs.

This is normally flat with a ark shape. The barbs also have more branches commonly known as barbules, which are connected to each other strengthening the feather. This gives the cushion is swell.

How we make our cushions

The Down, Contour and Rachis feathers are emptied into a large tank and mixed with a huge paddle. All our customers have a bespoke cushion case sewn to their size. This is made with internal pockets that help keep the feathers in position. Next the feathers are blown into the cushion. Once the cushion has been filled it is then checked for its density and ready to have our customers chosen fabric case carefully fitted and delivered.
